Until the New Testament there were only two orders of angels the Seraphim and Cherubim St. Paul extended the number by adding seven new orders bringing-up the number to nine orders They are, arranged according to their importance: Seraphim, Cherubim, Thrones, Dominations, Virtues, Powers, Principalities, Archangels and Angels. today numbers range from 7 to 12, with 9 being the most commonly used most contain the same ranks and differ only in the order presented.
